United Biscuits raises the bar on its environmental commitments

In its new two-year-on update report (see link below) on the company’s commitments for environmental sustainability, United Biscuits (UB), a leading manufacturer of biscuits and snacks, highlights that it has had to set itself new targets in some areas because progress has exceeded expectations.

Jeff van der Eems, UB’s Chief Operating Officer, said:
“After just two years working towards our environmental targets we are already finding it necessary to raise the bar as we have achieved targets early. Our water target has been accomplished with ten years to spare, our transport carbon emissions target has been comfortably exceeded with three years left and we have merged our UK and Northern Europe carbon emissions target after the Northern Europe element was achieved at the beginning of 2009.”

UB’s 2009 sustainability achievements include:
- Water use has reduced by 28% since 2007, exceeding the target to reduce it by 25% by 2020 ten years early. UB has now set itself a 45% reduction target for 2020.
- Transport carbon emissions have reduced by 29% since 2005, exceeding the 22% by 2012 target. A new target to reduce transport carbon emissions by 40% by 2012 has been set.
- UB achieved a 5% reduction in factory carbon emissions in 2009, making the achievement to date 28% since 1995 against a target of 35% by 2020.
- The target to achieve zero food waste to landfill by 2010 was achieved one year early.
- A 44% reduction in non-food waste to landfill was achieved in 2009. The goal to send zero non-food waste to landfill by 2015 has now been brought forward to 2012.
- Packaging has reduced by 13% since 2003, against a target of 20% by 2015.
- UB is one of the very first food manufacturers in Europe to source sustainable palm oil that is segregated throughout the supply chain. All UB products that contain palm oil will be made with certified sustainable palm oil from mid-2010. UB has also reduced the amount of palm oil used by 40% since 2005.

UB’s Achieving Sustainability 2009 Update report can be viewed at www.unitedbiscuits.com/sustainability.php. This sets out in detail UB’s performance against each of its sustainability commitments, the new targets that have been set, and gives case study examples of how UB is achieving its targets.

Launch of Top Employers for Working Families 2010

The search for family-friendly employers begins in April

Organisations that implement the best family-friendly policies are to be recognised in the ‘Top Employers for working families’ awards organised by leading work-life balance charity, Working Families.

The call for entries opens in mid April and closes on 30 June 2010. From today, employers can visit http://www.topemployersforworkingfamilies.org.uk/2010-register-interest.html to register their interest and receive further information.  The winners will be recognised at a gala lunch and awards ceremony in London in October, with shortlists announced in September.  The judging panel will include Prof Cary Cooper MBE, Mary Mercer, Principal Consultant, Institute for Employment Studies and Sarah Jackson OBE, Chief Executive, Working Families.

Uniquely, the Top Employers for working families list will be validated by independent human resource centre the Institute for Employment Studies.  It will provide the listed employers with a powerful tool for recruitment and retention of the best talent. In addition, a report will be produced enabling companies and organisations to make a comparison between themselves and an aggregated benchmark, based on all entries.

Award categories
The Top Employers for working families list has 15 awards categories to address different types of policy (such as paternity, flexible working, carers, emergency childcare) and to recognise the leaders within specific industries (such as retail, finance, professional services, public sector) and business sizes.  They awards will reward employers who demonstrate that policy alone is simply not enough: to get family-friendly working to take off in an organisation it is necessary to really embed it in the culture – often way ahead of actual legislation.

Why is it important to recognise family-friendly employers?
- 40% of the workforce has responsibilities for dependents – either children or parents – and forward-thinking companies that take a holistic approach to employing their staff often get the best from them.
- In a global economy, 24/7 culture and a technological age, the typical 9-5 is not always best for companies, clients or staff: flexible working often makes the best business sense all round.
- Growing phenomenon: half the UK workforce already works flexibly (14 out of 29 million) and 95% of companies offer some form of flexible working.

Sarah Jackson, CEO of Working Families says: ‘This is about what’s good for business - when personal responsibilities are met, employees can give more focus to their company or organisation. We’ve worked with organisations that have increased the productivity of their workforce by 20% by implementing family-friendly policies.  We want to recognise the employers that are leading the way.’

Quotes from 2009 winners
Sarah Bond, Head of Diversity & Employee Engagement, KPMG said: "KPMG is proud to have been identified as a Top Employer for Working Families.  We know that talented parents and carers want to work for employers that have a demonstrable commitment to supporting them achieve a better work-life balance.  As more and more employers recognise this, being identified as a Top Employer helps us stand out from the crowd.  The assessment process was also very rigorous which provides reassurance about the credibility of the list overall! "

Leon Foster-Hill, Diversity Manager, B&Q said: “Winning this award certainly raised our profile and has aided our ability to continue to recruit the best people to our business - regardless of their background.  With term-time, job share, split shifts and part-time contracts all on offer we really do offer real family focused flexibility.”
