~ Over 5,500 people vote to recognise those individuals living the ‘richest’ lives ~ ~ Winners inspire by their efforts to combat gun crime, provide aid following disasters and help children across the developing world ~ London, 8th September, 2009 - forum3, the leading careers fair for the not-for-profit sector, has announced the winners of The 2009 Alternative Rich List. Recognising individuals who enrich other people’s lives, the list has captured the heart of more than 5,000 voters who supported the rejection of finance-focussed success measurement, to nominate and shortlist people who make a difference. One hundred people were nominated for the Alternative Rich List this year and more than five times the number of people voted this year than in 2008. The three winners were selected by the public and demonstrate commitment to society from local community projects to world-wide campaigns. Thelma Perkins gave up her job as social worker to dedicate herself to distracting young people from joining gangs, and continues to make a difference in young people’s lives. After Thelma’s son was wounded in a shooting, she has worked tirelessly in schools, youth centres and in the community, educating young people about the impact of street crime. Thelma founded the Mothers in Pain voluntary organisation for the victims and families of gun, knife and gang crimes, sharing information, educating young people and providing support. Ex-UK Royal Navy Search and Rescue diver, Tom Henderson, developed ShelterBox to provide aid following natural disasters. Shelterbox, an easily transportable container, provides shelter and other equipment essential for survival. With support of Rotary Clubs worldwide, ShelterBox has responded to more than 100 disasters in over 50 countries, providing shelter to more than 80,000 people following earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami, floods and humanitarian disasters such as conflict and the AIDs crisis. Susie Howe from The Bethany Children's Trust set up a community-based orphan care organisation in Zimbabwe, helping 8,000 orphan children suffering poverty, deprivation and illness. Susie also set up Pavement Project in the UK which produces materials for working with street children round the world. forum3’s Director Deborah Hockham said, ‘We couldn’t have anticipated the massive public interest in this year’s Alternative Rich List. It seems to touch a nerve with so many of us who are inspired by the unsung heroes whose wealth is not defined by pounds and pence but by the way they have enriched other people’s lives. These are the real heroes of society and Thelma, Tom and Susie are exactly that. Through the dedication and commitment they have made a difference to the lives of a people across the world and that’s simply incredible. We are immensely proud to be able to recognise their achievements with this award’.’ Throughout the months of July and August, people across the UK voted via the forum3 website on their Alternative Rich List candidates. A total of 3131 voted for Thelma Perkins, Tom Henderson and Susie Howe.

Interxion, a leading European operator of carrier-neutral data centres, has been selected by Stardoll, the world's largest paper doll site to provide equipment housing facilities in its Stockholm data centre. Stardoll allows its users to create their own paper dolls or style different celebrity dolls with virtual clothes and accessories, and now has a significant and growing community of 34 million users. The company needed additional data centre capacity to support their continued expansion. “The number of Stardoll users is increasing by up to 80,000 per day, and we simply needed more space to grow," said Fredrik Nylander, CTO of Stardoll. “But we also needed a carrier-neutral solution that will help us improve network resilience while driving down associated bandwidth costs. Interxion’s data centre in Stockholm gives customers access to 20 network operators and ISPs as well as Netnod, the Swedish Internet Exchange. We need a selection of stable high-speed connections to the Internet, so this level of access and choice was another deciding factor.”
“We are very pleased to be a part of the success story of Stardoll,” said Peder Bank, Interxion Sweden MD. “Their virtual business model makes them, in principle, totally dependent on their Internet connectivity and the stable operation of their IT systems. This is an area where we can offer industry-leading expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure, as well as the capacity they need for future growth.”
